Two Points of View on the Rolex Air-King

Regular WatchTime reader and watch aficionado Rich Tyson, our special guest blogger, contributes this very different review of one of his own favorite timepieces, the Rolex Air-King Ref. 14010, in which he and a trained watchmaker each examine the watch from their own POV.

The Rolex Air-King is a “time-only” watch that Rolex has offered since 1945. It was named by Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf, who wanted to honor the British Royal Air Force that was so highly regarded after returning from their missions in the 1930s. Replica Watches at one point offered an entire line of “Air” models, yet only the Air King remains. At 34 mm in diameter, it is the smallest watch in the Rolex family of men’s watches. While many men today would scoff at a 34-mm wristwatch, the Oyster case adds a beefiness to the piece that makes it appear larger. If you are like me, you enjoy watches with history and ones of typical vintage sizes.

I find myself in an exciting time in my watch collecting life. I was once a quantity-over-quality guy, grabbing anything that was different than what I already had, and often the bigger the better. What changed my entire mindset was inheriting my great grandfather’s Bulova manual-wind wristwatch, possibly to be discussed in a future article. I brought the Cheap Replica Watches to Dave Kuyt, who I had known since high school and whose family owns and operates a watch-and-clock repair business here in Rochester, NY. After an overhaul and a ton of education about proper ownership of a manual-wind piece, I set off to try it out. What I found shocked me: wearing a 34-mm timepiece that needed daily attention to stay the reliable timekeeping course was a fantastic feeling. Adding to that the realization that my great grandfather had done so with the same piece, as did my grandfather and, for a period of time, my father; the sentimental history of that piece; and finally the feeling of interacting with a watch as a machine — it all changed me entirely.
Aesthetically speaking, I love the Cheap Rolex Replica. Though 34 mm, it wears a bit larger yet still feels comfortable under the sleeve of a dress shirt. It is as much at home on my wrist in a suit, as it is with a polo shirt during summer. Not the same can be said for all watches measuring 36 mm or less, including my Bulova. The thickness of the Oyster case and Jubilee bracelet really give it the wrist presence the watch needs to be as versatile as it is. There is even more to love about the the Oyster case and steel Jubilee bracelet. Having a year-and-a-half-old daughter with me full time, you can imagine what gets thrown at me during a given day, literally and figuratively. Whether washing bottles, changing diapers, feeding or bath time, I know this Cheap Rolex Replica UK can take it. It is a very comforting feeling not having to take it off or be extra cautious with it during the day. Also, the fact that it is in steel and can be easily polished gives me peace of mind if I happen to I smack it into a door frame while showing houses or subject it to any of the other abuses it faces in a given day.

Lastly, as I noted above, I enjoy the history of a piece, both individually and within a model line. The Rolex Air-King has a lengthy and unique history. Having been in the U.S. Navy, and specifically in the aviation field, I appreciate the roots of the Air King. Anything designed to honor the military wins in my book, and this piece does so without making it the focus.

My Top 3 Rolex GMT-Master Replica Watches

Whenever I write something about Rolex, whether it’s about new product introductions at Baselworld or something involving vintage Rolex watches, I receive a great deal of commentary and questions. One of the most often-asked questions is,“What is your favorite Rolex model?”My personal pick is the Rolex GMT-Master Replica. Not only because of the interesting history it has, as the watch of Pan-Am pilots and NASA astronauts, nor even the fact that Tom Selleck had one on his wrist in “Magnum: P.I.,” but also because it is a very reliable and easy-to-use travel companion. For this Fratello Friday article, I picked three of my favorite Rolex GMT-Master models. From the first models, with their bakelite turning bezels, to the current models that feature an independent extra hour hand and a ceramic turning bezel, there are plenty to choose from, as this watch has been on the market since 1954.

1. Rolex GMT-Master II Reference 16710

My first pick is the now discontinued model Rolex Replica UK with a blue-and-red bezel. This model was introduced in 1989 and was produced until 2007. Due to the independent hour hand and rotatable bezel, the wearer is able to read three different time zones. With its variety of three different aluminum inlays for the bezels, and the ability to have them swapped every so often (either DIY or at a Rolex service center), it was a very versatile watch. Rolex aficionados have developed nicknames for the black-and-red-bezel version (Coke) and the blue-and-red bezel (Pepsi). The Oyster bracelet on this model had an all-matte finish and had a flip-lock on the clasp to ensure safety.

2. Rolex GMT-Master II Reference 116710LN

In 2008, Rolex introduced the current lineup of GMT-Master II watches. The case of the watch grew in both thickness and diameter and the lugs become a bit larger as well. The hour markers are bigger, and the watch featured a Trip-Lock crown and a ceramic bezel. The ceramic bezel will not discolor like the old aluminum bezels did and, more importantly, they won’t scratch. The red GMT hand, which was so recognizable on the previous stainless-steel Cheap Rolex Replica models, was replaced with a green one on this model. Also, the printing of the word “GMT-Master” on the dial is in green instead of white. The bracelet of the Reference 116710LN GMT-Master II is quite different from the simpler and much criticized bracelets of old. The bracelet on the GMT-Master II 116710LN has a new clasp (with micro-adjustment and the capability to extend the bracelet) and a polished center link. The polished center link of the bracelet and the green GMT hand are the reason that this watch comes in at #2. If the bracelet had an all-matte finish, or if the GMT hand were still in red, this one could well be ranked first on my list. The new black-and-blue model that Cheap Replica Watches introduced at this year’s Baselworld is a handsome version, but I still prefer the green model; the blue color probably has to grow on me.

3. Rolex GMT-Master Reference 1675

Not the oldest GMT-Master, but still a nice vintage watch that can be found for relatively decent prices. Since there are so many of them still around, you can pick one you really like (with patina hands and hour markers or ones that are still white and fresh) in a good, wearable condition. The plexi crystal adds a fun element, but must be – of course – treated with care. It easily scratches. These vintage Cheap Rolex Replica UK are quite a bit smaller than the later models and noticeably thinner. This reference has no independent moving hour hand; you have to use the bezel to read a second time zone. The extra hour is a 24-hour indicator.Aside from missing the independent hour hand, the vintage 1675 has the looks of authentic “tool watch” — no glossy dials, polished center links or white-gold rings around the hour markers. However, I’d pick one of the modern versions over this one if I needed a watch for daily wear.

Rare Vintage Rolex Replica Watches of Steel Chronographs

Perhaps the most important “Paul Newman” Daytonas ever offered at auction, this steel chronograph dating to 1969 — with a tachymeter bezel, 1/5-second-divisions track printed in red, and “tropical” Paul Newman dial layout (characterized by, among other elements, the combination of hashmarks with tiny squares in the chrono subdials— is one of only two such examples of this reference known to be in existence. The Italian nickname “Oyster Sotto” (“Oyster Underneath”) refers to the rare configuration of the word “Oyster” placed under the word “Cosmograph” at the 12 o’clock position. This is among the very first Rolex Daytona Replica watches with Paul Newman dials to be placed in an Oyster case, with screw-down pushers offering greater water resistance over the previous models’ “pump” pushers. The watch has a 37.5-mm diameter case and a stainless steel Oyster bracelet with deployant clasp, and contains a manual-wind Valjoux 727 movement.

Another highly collectible example of the same reference, also circa 1969, this watch features a Paul Newman dial in the so-called “Panda” style (off-white dial with black chronograph subdials and outer chapter ring) and like the Rolex Replica UK Oyster Sotto above, offers an intriguing example of aged color on the dial: the 1/5-seconds scale on the outer edge has evolved into an exceptionally uniform, and unique, shade of caramel orange.

With its wildly unconventional style compared to Rolex models of today, the Zerographe is largely a mystery even to Rolex aficionados and scholars, as there is no official information on the model available from Cheap Rolex Replica or even any period advertising to provide detail on it. What is known about this extraordinarily rare timepiece, however, is that it was the first Rolex chronograph in an Oyster case. This piece, issued in 1937, is the first to be fitted with the in-house Caliber 10 1/2″, a manually-wound movement with a single-button flyback chronograph function.

The Best Fake Rolex that graces the cover of Phillips’ catalog for this auction is one of only 12 pieces ever made. Extensive research has show that the example below, bearing case number 051’314, was the second one manufactured in this extremely limited run. The watch, dating to 1942, is even more significant to collectors because none of the 12 pieces were ever offered directly to the public but instead, most likely, presented to racing team owners and drivers that Fake Rolex Watches was sponsoring at the time. It features a a silvered matte dial, rose-gold raised Arabic numerals and baton hour markers, a tachymeter scale and a telemeter scale in blue print. It contains the manual-wind caliber 55 VBR, which powers a split-seconds chronograph function, undoubtedly for use in timing races.

This Daytona from 1966 — again, one of only a handful known to exist with this type of dial — got its nickname from the blue-printed pulsometer scale along the dial’s outer edge. This numbered scale — which necessitated a redesign of the existing Replica Watches Daytona dial to accommodate it — was intended for use by medical professionals, who would use it in conjunction with the chronograph to determine the exact number per minute of a patient’s heartbeats. On this dial, the hour markers were moved slightly closer to the center while the minutes scale and “T-SWISS” designation were also repositioned.
